Geography – Our World

Countries and capital cities in the UK:

The children will be looking at the countries that make up the UK and their capital cities, their physical features and discuss similarities and differences of each city and country.

 

English

The Queen’s Handbag and Handa’s Surprise

The children will use these stories complete short writing activities such as making predictions, retelling the story and retelling the story from another perspective.

Our main focus will be on making grammatically accurate sentences with letters formed correctly.  In guided reading, we will continue to teach the children strategies to support their reading whilst encouraging them to listen to their own reading to see if they can self-correct and spot errors as they read. Our main focus will be to read with expression.

In phonics, we will continue learning the extended code deepening our knowledge of spellings and sounds. We will look at different ways of making the i and o sounds such as ‘igh’ in night and ‘oa’ in goat.

 

Maths

In Maths we will be looking at the following areas:

Place Value: To secure our knowledge of numbers to 20.

Addition and Subtraction:  To add and subtract one-digit and two-digit numbers to 20, including zero. We will also be working on our number bonds to 10 and 20

Science

Materials:

We will be carrying out two investigations

– one into the best material for an umbrella

– one looking at the most absorbent material for cleaning spillages in school.

Other Curriculum Areas

RE – Christianity – Our focus will be on Christianity and about what Christians believe.

DT- We will be looking at fruit and vegetables and how they grow. We will then design our own recipe to make a fruit smoothie.

Music – Charanga unit:  Into the Groove- we will be looking at rhythm and pulse and giving our opinion on different types of music. We will be performing our song at the end of the unit.

PE – Dance- We will be learning a routine to perform with a partner focusing on balance, agility and coordination.

PSHCE – Healthy Lifestyles – we will be learning about eating healthily and about how to keep our teeth clean.

Computing – We will be using the computers and working on our keyboard and mouse skills. We will also be thinking about how to be a responsible computer user linked to Safer Internet Week.

UN Convention of the Rights of the Child

In the Summer term 2025, we achieved the UNICEF UK Gold Rights Respecting Schools award. This term the Rights Respecting council will be planning a ‘Gold Day’ to celebrate this. We will be organising lots of fun activities linked to the Rights of the child. The council will write to you in the next few weeks to share more information.

Empowering Learning Skills and Personal Development

Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE):
We will be learning about eating healthily and about how to keep our teeth clean.

 

Empowering Learning Skills:
We will be focusing on how to be an independent enquirer.

  • Asking relevant questions
  • Offering options about an issue and explaining thinking
  • Using ‘how’ and ‘why’ when trying to find new things out
  • Giving a simple opinion and explaining why
