Curriculum Overview – Autumn 2

History – Monarchy

This term our whole school topic is ‘The Role of Monarchy’. In Year 1 we will be looking at the Queen’s life and focussing on her coronation. We will be comparing life in the 1950s and now and look at things have changed or what things have stayed the same. We will be looking at sources and seeing what it would have been like going to school in the 1950s. We will also look at King Charles and his coronation; comparing and contrasting the two events.

English

Our books for this half term are Stickman and the Jolly Postman (Christmas edition). We will be, as always, looking at the language and key vocabulary used in both books and making links between both books. We will be working on rewriting the story of the stickman changing one key element and for the Jolly Postman we will be writing a letter.

In phonics this half term, we will be continuing with the extended code. We will be looking at different ways to make the vowel sounds using two letters i.e ay/ai/a-e

We will be using our Letterjoin scheme to focus on lower case letters and making sure that we are starting our letters in the correct place.

In guided reading, we will be continuing to support children in building up their reading strategies and increasing their fluency and pace so that they are reading in a story telling voice.

Maths

In maths we will be looking at a variety of areas over the half term. We will be continuing with addition and subtraction using the part whole model. We will be starting work on 2D shapes and recognising the names of common shapes and their properties. We will be moving on other areas of maths such as length and measure, capacity and volume. We will send some short videos explaining how we teach these methods in school.

Science

Our science topic for this term we will be moving on to animals including humans. We will be sorting animals by their features and talking how we can categorise animals. We will look at the human body with a focus on the 5 senses. As we do throughout the year, we will complete a seasonal walk looking how the seasons are changing.

Empowering Learning

This half term in Key Stage One, we will continue to teach ‘Empowering Learning Skills’.  It is important that we explicitly teach children about these behaviours to support their learning in school.  Each week we will choose a specific learning behaviour that we will focus on as a key stage.  In class, we will discuss how children can demonstrate these learning skills and what this should look like in Year 1.  This half term, our celebration assembly will also have a focus on ‘Empowering Learning Skills’. A breakdown of these empowering learning skills will be sent out with the interim reports. This half term our focus will be how to be a self-manager.

UN Convention of the Rights of the Child

Each week we have a focus ‘Article of the Week’. We focus on this in a weekly assembly and in follow up classroom activities. Some of the themes and related articles for this half term are ‘Remembrance’,’ Anti-bullying’ and ‘World Children’s Day’.

We are taking part in Outright 24-25. The focus of this will be learning about democracy and global citizenship. We will also be thinking about how we can speak out and take action and we will be learning about children and young people who are doing the same.
