Medication in school

Illness, Accidents, Allergies and Medicines

If your child is ill in school, or has an accident, we may need to contact you. For this reason, up to date emergency contact details are essential.

When your child starts school, you will be asked to give details of your address and telephone number and also one or two other emergency contact telephone numbers (i.e. other family members, friends or neighbours) in case we are unable to reach you. If any contact details change, please let us know as soon you can.

What to do if your child is ill

If your child is unwell and cannot attend school, you must notify the school office by calling 0161 881 8880 and selecting option 1 to record a child’s absence. This must be done every day your child cannot attend school before 9.05am. If we do not receive a reason for your child’s absence, this will be recorded on the register as unauthorised.
It is school policy that children with vomiting or diarrhoea symptoms must not come back to school until they have been clear of these symptoms for 48 hours.

Medical Conditions

If your child has been diagnosed with a medical condition please let us know immediately.  Depending on the condition, a Health Care Plan may be required for your child to ensure that we are able to offer the best possible care and support for them whilst they are in school.

Medicines

If, in exceptional circumstances, it is necessary for children to take medicine during school time, the following procedure applies:

  • Please tell your child’s teacher and come to the school office, with the medication, where you will be asked to fill in a form and sign it. Depending on the type of medication, it will be stored in the school office or in the medical box in the classroom.
  • Whilst every effort will be made to make sure a child gets his/her medicine, we cannot accept responsibility if it is forgotten. Older children should be able to remember to ask for it.
  • If you are at all anxious that it will be forgotten, you are welcome to come into school and administer the medicine yourself.

 

Medicines will be given to children at school only under the following criteria:

  • The medicine must be prescribed by your GP and labelled with:-
    a). the child’s name
    b). the name of the medicine
    c). the dosage required
    d). when the dose is to be taken

 

Asthma

If your child has asthma, they may keep their inhaler in the medical box in the classroom. You will need to complete an asthma form detailing the when and how the inhaler must be taken.

Allergies

If your child has any allergies or intolerances, it is important to let us know. If your child needs emergency medication for their allergies, please contact the school office to complete the relevant form.

We are a NUT FREE school. Please do not give your child any food that may contain nuts.
