Curriculum Overview – Spring 2

Literacy – Key Texts

Our texts this term:
– ‘Monkey and me’ by Emily Gravett, we will be doing this alongside ‘Hang on Monkey!’.
– ‘Jungle Jamboree’ by Jo Empson
Children should be able to identify the different features of the book such as; title, front cover and back over. Children will learn the direction of print and to distinguish between a word and a letter.
Children will assign meaning to their marks, at times writing letters that represent different words.

Maths

Our Maths topics this term will be:
– Height and Length – know the difference between height and length. Be able to compare two objects to see which is taller/shorter or longer/shorter.
– Mass – compare the weight of 2 objects. Be able to identify which one is heavier and which one is lighter.
– Capacity – notice that different containers can hold different amounts and compare these. Be able to identify when a container is full or empty.

Understanding the World

We will visit the farm and discuss what we think we will see and afterwards we will talk about our experience
– We will look at the roles of people around us – our adults and their jobs. Closer to the time we will ask for parents to volunteer to come in and discuss their jobs with the children.
– Talk about our families and how all families look different.
– Learn about different religious holidays – Holi, Eid al-Fitr and Easter

Expressive Art and Design

– Learn about colour mixing and apply this to a craft.
– Continue to craft using a range of different materials beginning to add more detail.

Personal, social and emotional development (PSE)

– Begin to develop ways to resolve conflict with support from adults.
– To express their feelings using words such as happy and sad.
– In Think Equal we will continue to read books that highlight that we are all different and emphasis that this is something we should celebrate.

Physical Development

– In P.E the children will be using different apparatus to practice their climbing and balancing
– To develop their pencil grip in preparation for writing.
– Continue to develop their ability to use one-handed tools beginning to show more accuracy.

 

Key Dates

Smithills farm trip: 2nd March. Information letter has been sent.
World Book Day: 5th March – Stay and Read. Dress as your favourite book character or come in your pyjamas/ comfy clothes. Don’t forget to bring in your favourite books.
Progress evening: 4th, 17th March and 19th March (4th and 17th face to face, 19th virtual)
Comic relief: 20th March
Welly Walk: 20th March
Term ends: 2nd April at 2pm.
